Training the translator 3.0 — How to prepare future translators for the translation business?

What is the impact of translation technologies and its recent developments on the translation business? And what are the consequences for teaching and training future translators when it comes to translation technologies?

Do we still need to teach students what a translation memory is and how it works? What about terminology management, translation project management and software localization tools? Does a future translator need to be trained to be able to click somewhere in the latest version of SDK Translation Studio 2013 in order to change advanced filter settings? What DOC, PPT, XLS, PHP, JS, XML and XLIFF are? And what about machine translation? What about workflows and processes?

Apparently there are quite a lot of interesting topics for a future translator to be learned. This presentation will give a quick overview about developments in teaching and training translation technologies both at universities and in companies and question whether current approaches still are up-to-date and really prepare for the job.

Daniel Zielinski — Profile

Daniel Zielinski holds a degree in translation from the department Applied Linguistics, Translating and Interpreting from Saarland University, Germany. From 2003 to 2009 he worked as a lecturer and research assistant at the Linguistic Data Processing department at Saarland University and was involved in several European research projects focusing on using translation technologies in translator education such as eCoLoRe, eCoLoTrain and eCoLoMedia. Daniel has also been working as an independent trainer and consultant for translation tools for the past five years. He is currently managing director at Loctimize, an independent service provider specializing in training, consulting, and support for translation and localization technologies.
