Developments in Translation Memory

This paper gives an overview of the development in Translation Memory tools during the last 20 years by looking at:

• the TM systems available today and the functionalities provided in these tools:
• growing number and diversity of document formats
• integration of project management features
• necessity of interfaces between TM tools and Content Management Systems
• the development regarding functionalities of TM systems is strongly affecting translation workflows: e.g. the fragmentation of workflows and documents
• this development has to be reflected in translation training and requires:
• up-to-date curricula
• suitable teaching materials
• new teaching concepts like project-oriented courses or blended learning scenarios.
